Day 9 – (08/24) Salisbury, MA

We went from a big city to small towns as we headed north today.

The journey to Salisbury was short (87 miles) and very interesting.  The weather was excellent (mostly sunny, low 80s, light winds).  We’re camped at Black Bear Campground in Salisbury.

Fun Things
  • Our route past Boston (MA 1A) took us under Boston Harbor ... cool!
  • We stopped at Bradley Palmer State Park near Topsfield for lunch ...  it was very peaceful.
  • We learned how the locals pronounce Gloucester … “glaw-sta”.
  • The Lobster Pool in Pigeon Cove has GREAT seafood!
Memories
Here are a few things about Massachusetts that we’ll remember.
  • Dunkin Donuts shops are everywhere
  • Rotaries (a.k.a. traffic circles, roundabouts) are a real pain
  • We really liked Boston and Cape Ann
After setting up at the campground, we traveled most of the National Geographic Cape Ann Ramble scenic drive (Page 43-45).  Starting at Essex, we traveled Cape Ann by going to Gloucester, Rockport and Halibut Point State Park.  The route along MA 133, MA 127 and MA 127A took us past many beautiful homes dating back to the early 1700s.

The Fishermen's Memorial Statue at Gloucester was a special stop.  The reminder of those lost at sea, including those from the "Andrea Gail" who died in 1991, is very sobering.

Pigeon Cove has a real treasure ... The Lobster Pool restaurant.  We learned of it from a stranger we met along the park trail.  Our shrimp dinners were fresh, tender, perfectly breaded and delicious.
It looks unassuming, but it's very popular
Outside dining is fun here
Sunset at The Lobster Pool
We felt some effect in Boston from the VA earthquake yesterday.  Now we need to watch the path of hurricane Irene.  We may head inland this weekend.
