Day 18 - (09/02) Waddington, NY

It was a beautiful day to drive 116 miles to the St. Lawrence River.  We took NY 86 west from Lake Placid to Paul Smith's, NY 30 north to Malone and NY 37 west to Coles Creek State Park.  We're on the river, about 15 miles southwest of Massena.

The Campground
We were blessed.  This is a holiday weekend and we had no reservations.  The campground has 230 sites; only 2 were available when we arrived.  The park is beautiful and we have a great view of the river.
Site 2 - Coles Creek State Park
(apple cider donuts make it home safely)

Eisenhower Lock
Access to the lock has changed dramatically since our last visit.  9/11 caused barriers and fences to be installed.  We couldn't get close enough for good views of the lock.  The last ship of the day had passed when we got there.

St. Lawrence Power Dam
The Robert Moses - Robert H. Saunders power dam was built as a joint project between the New York Power Authority and Ontario Hydro.  The dam generated its first power in 1958.

A Surprise Treat
We saw a sign for Kaneb Orchards as we passed by Massena.  They advertised apple cider donuts ... we were sold then and there.  We returned after setting up at the campground and discovered that today is their first day to be open this season.  We had to wait 10 minutes for a batch of donuts to be finished.  They were fresh and fragrant.  We'll taste test them later tonight.
