Day 29 – (09/13) Houlton, ME

We were in a fog today (literally) and it almost turned into a day where we did nothing but drive.

This is what we saw, or didn’t see, when we woke up.

Our 162 mile drive was simple: ME 189 southwest from Lubec to Whiting, and then US 1 north to Houlton.

We abandoned plans to see the first three points of interest along our route.  It was too foggy to see two of them and we couldn’t find the third.  We were batting 0 for 3 and things weren’t looking good.  Then, things perked up as we approached Calais.

Lunch at Calais
We had a very nice lunch at Karen’s Main Street Diner.  They offer a varied menu.  The server was friendly and accommodating.  Carol had an egg salad sandwich and Dick had a Spanish omelet.  Our selections were excellent.

The drive between Calais and Houlton offered beautiful views of an increasingly remote area.

We’re staying at My Brother’s Place Campground.  No Dave, we’re not parked outside your home in Vermont.  This Houlton location is the only campground for many miles.  Fortunately, it’s very nice.

We explored downtown Houlton.  It’s a small town.  The buildings, businesses and homes are well maintained.  There’s a square in the center of town.  It’s very quiet and nice here.  It felt like a sleepy college town.

We had dinner at The Vault Restaurant just off the square.  The building used to be a small bank.  The door to the old bank vault opens into the dining area.  Some of the diners can be seated and served inside the vault.  It’s pretty cool.

A storm moved in after dark.  We had intermittent, heavy showers until well after midnight.
