Day 27 – (09/11) Lubec, ME (Day 1)

We're not using our Verizon cell phone or internet services here because they incur a Canadian surcharge.  Postings will be late for the next few days.

Today was sunny and cool.  We traveled 135 miles from Bar Harbor to Lubec by following most of National Geographic’s Maine’s Big Sur scenic route (Pg. 15-18).

The route began just north of Bar Harbor in Ellsworth.  We took US-1N to ME-186, ME-186 south to Schoodic Point and then north to US-1N at Gouldsboro, US-1N to US-1A, US-1A north to Harrington, US-1N to Columbia Falls, ME-187 south to Jonesport and then north to US-1N, US-1N to ME-189, and east on ME-189 to Lubec.

Trip highlights included the Frenchman Bay Scenic Turnout, Acadia National Park’s Schoodic Point, Wonsqueak, Jonesport and Lubec.

Frenchman Bay Scenes
This turnout provided outstanding views of Cadillac Mountain and Mount Desert Island.

Schoodic Point
The windswept granite shores of Schoodic Peninsula offered views of Cadillac Mountain, Mount Desert Island and tidal pools.
Lobster boat and Winter Harbor Light
Tidal pools
Wonsqueak Harbor
This little fishing village along ME-187 made the hit parade because of its name.
Welcome to Wonsqueak

Jonesport
Jonesport is a boatbuilding and fishing community.

Lubec
Lubec is the easternmost town in the US.  It was once home to 19 sardine factories.  The Bay of Fundy tides rise 20 to 30 feet here ... you can see the tide effects in pictures below.
We had a very nice dinner here
Downtown Lubec is small, but very attractive

Lubec Harbor
Light in Canada ... note high tide waterline

The Sunset Point Campground was a surprise and a delight.  It’s small and was poorly rated by Woodalls.  The rating was way off the mark.  We have a great site.
